Roger Hutchinson encountered the game of Shinty less than fourteen years ago. He would shortly be taking up a job which involved reporting sport at the West Highland Free Press and, driving north through Ballachulish, he came across a group of boys using what he now knows to be junior camain on a patch of worn ground before the council houses. This, he was told, was the old game of Shinty itself. It was still the major winter sport in large parts of the Highlands and even in one or two islands. There were great stories about its history. He asked to see a book which would tell him more, but was told apart from the excellent energetic Shinty Year Book no such publication was in print.
